Tie Guan Yin (鐵觀音) — also romanized as Tieguanyin, Ti Kuan Yin, or Tie Guan Yin — is one of China’s most celebrated oolong teas, produced in Anxi County, Fujian Province. Named after the Buddhist deity Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy), this tightly rolled, jade-green oolong is prized for its orchid fragrance (兰花香, lán huā xiāng), creamy texture, and extraordinary fragrance that persists across multiple infusions.

Overview
Origin: Anxi County, Fujian Province, China
Oxidation: 15–30% (traditional can be higher; modern qingxiang style very low)
Roast: Low (qingxiang style) to medium-high (nongxiang/aged style)
Character: Orchid floral, creamy, sweet; some versions buttery or vegetal; high-roast versions show caramel and minerals
Two major style schools:

The dominant commercial version today is qingxiang — green-rolled, minimally oxidized, refrigerated. Traditional Anxi Tieguanyin as produced before the 1990s was more oxidized and roasted.
Spelling Variants
The same tea is romanized in different ways depending on the pronunciation system and regional tradition:
- Tieguanyin — modern Hanyu Pinyin, preferred in mainland China
- Tie Guan Yin — Pinyin with spaces
- Ti Kuan Yin — older Wade-Giles or Cantonese-influenced romanization
- Iron Goddess of Mercy — common English translation name
All refer to the same tea from the same cultivar and origin. The tieguanyin cultivar is now grown in many regions (Taiwan, Vietnam, elsewhere) but Anxi origin is considered the authentic source.
