Innateness Hypothesis

The Poverty of the Stimulus argument:

The core argument for the innateness hypothesis is the poverty of the stimulus (POS): the input children receive is insufficient to allow them to learn language through general-purpose learning mechanisms alone. Specifically:

  1. Children are not systematically corrected for grammatical errors (parents respond to truth content, not grammatical form)
  2. Children are never exposed to negative evidence (they are not shown examples of what is ungrammatical)
  3. Despite this, children converge on the same grammar, make predictable (not random) systematic errors, and overgeneralize in predictable ways
  4. Children show knowledge of grammatical distinctions that cannot have been directly derived from their input

The most cited POS-based observation: children learning English never produce structure-dependent questions by applying a surface-string rule. When asked to form a question from “The man who is tall is happy,” children never say “Is the man who tall is happy?” (applying a simple front-the-first-‘is’ rule) — they always correctly produce “Is the man who is tall happy?” Despite having no direct instruction on this, they behave as if they know that question formation is structure-dependent (operates on syntactic phrases) not string-dependent. History

The innateness hypothesis emerged from Chomsky’s landmark review of Skinner’s Verbal Behavior (1959), in which he demolished the behaviorist account of language acquisition as stimulus-response learning, and from his 1965 Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, which introduced the LAD and the competence-performance distinction. Universal Grammar was elaborated through multiple versions of generative grammar (Standard Theory, Government and Binding, Minimalism) from the 1960s to the present.   • “Innateness means language is hardwired word by word.” The innateness hypothesis is about abstract grammatical principles and parameters, not about specific words or constructions.
  • “If language is innate, you don’t need to learn it.” The innate component specifies the form of possible grammars, not specific language content. Children must still acquire the specific vocabulary, morphology, and parameter settings of their ambient language from input.
  • “Universal Grammar means all languages are the same.” UG specifies what is universal (principles) and what varies parametrically (parameter values). The rich cross-linguistic diversity in word order, morphology, and syntax is accounted for through parametric variation.
