Academic Writing

Definition:

Academic writing is the formal, discipline-specific register of written language expected in schools, universities, and scholarly publications. It is characterised by objectivity, precision, hedged claims (modal verbs, epistemic adverbs), citation practices, and adherence to disciplinary conventions for structure (e.g., IMRaD format in sciences).

Core Features

  • Formality — Avoidance of contractions, colloquialisms, and first-person in some disciplines
  • Hedging — Claims are qualified: “may suggest,” “appears to indicate,” rather than absolute assertions
  • Explicit argumentation — Claims are supported with evidence from cited sources
  • Discipline-specific conventions — APA, MLA, Vancouver, or Chicago citation styles; field-specific jargon; expected section structures
  • Coherence devices — Transitional phrases, clear topic sentences, cohesive ties between ideas

Academic Writing in L2 Contexts

For language learners, academic writing presents compound challenges:

  • Mastering the target language’s grammar and vocabulary
  • Learning genre conventions that may differ from L1 academic traditions
  • Developing academic vocabulary (Tier 2 and Tier 3 words)
  • Understanding citation ethics and avoiding plagiarism in a new cultural context

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is the sub-field of English language teaching specifically addressing these needs.
